Helping Children Through California Wildfires and Other Natural Disasters

Writer's picture: Jason JosephJason Joseph

The California wildfires have been devastating, and there are thousands of families that have been displaced. For those that have children, this can be an incredibly difficult time. Validate their feelings of fear or sadness or even confusion, and use phrases like it's normal to feel this way.Our kids are trying to work through their emotions. They're gonna look to their parents for reassurance. Stick to routines as much as possible. Maintain regular schedules of meals, bedtime, and even school work. Just anything that gives our kids a sense of normalcy.Allow your kids to have some involvement of what's going on, whether it's recovery efforts or helping around the house, giving kids this responsibility can allow them to feel a better sense of control.Do your best to limit media exposure, focus on calming things like games, reading, or even creative projects, and reduce family discussions about the tragedy in front of your kids.Just as importantly, take care of yourself. Simply being present, listening, and comforting our children can have a significant difference in how they handle these situations. And just remember, no matter what you're going through, you're not alone
